US Model 1842 Pistol by Henry Aston & Co c1851
As well as being the first percussion ignition system pistol adopted by the US military, the model 1842 was also the last big bore, single shot issued in any great quantity.
Here we have an as found, attic condition, U.S. model 1842, percussion pistol made by Henry Aston in 1851.
The round, .54 caliber, sighted, smoothbore barrel with attached swivel rammer measures 8 ½ inches with the whole pistol measuring 14 inches. The barrel inspection and proof marks are no longer visible.
The markings on the flat lock are still visible. The center of the lock is marked ‘U.S. / H ASTON & CO’ and the tail ‘MIDD TN / CONN / 1851’. The action is in excellent working order.
The brass furniture and walnut stock are in good used condition. Two faint inspector’s cartouches are still visible on the stock.
Overall, a very solid, soldier proof, pistol that may have even seen service in the American Civil War.
