US Cavalry Remington New Model Army c1864

$0

Here we have a genuine, Civil War US Cavalry, Remington New Model percussion revolver in excellent condition. The serial number of ‘104419’ puts production of this revolver around October 1864.

It is estimated that around 122,000 of these ‘NEW MODEL’, .44 caliber revolvers, where made from 1863 to 1875. With a barrel length of 8 inches, a solid frame and a six-shot cylinder, it is quite a robust and hefty revolver.

The revolver is in excellent condition and working order. The frame has strong traces of original blue finish with the barrel and rammer assembly having an even, plum patina.

The three line ‘PATENTED SEPT. 14. 1858 / E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A. / NEW MODEL’ address is clearly visible as are the sub-inspector’s marks on various parts of the revolver. See photos.

The crisp, three letter, script cartouche ‘OWA’ for Orville W Ainsworth is clearly visible. Ainsworth worked as the civilian Principal Sub-Inspector for the Ordnance Office of the War Department during and after the Civil War.

Overall, an excellent example of a Remington New Model that entered service with the Union cavalry.
