Top Hat Percussion Pistol by Sykes c1830

The ‘Top Hat’ pistol is a scarce form of percussion pistol that first appeared around 1825. The pistol used the earliest form of percussion cap that resembled a top hat, hence the name. The percussion cap was held in place by a spring-loaded retainer. This style of pistol only lasted till around 1835.

This drop-down trigger pistol was probably made by Samuel Sykes of Oxford around 1830.

The .45 caliber, smoothbore, screw-off barrel with engraved muzzle measures just over 1 ½ inches with the whole pistol measuring 6 inches. Both the barrel and the breech have Birmingham proofs.

The frame, barrel, hammer, percussion cap mount and sliding safety all have varying forms of engraving.

The action is stiff but still functions.

The very finely checked, walnut grip with a vacant white metal echelon is in excellent condition. The butt features a well-defined, good condition lion’s head.

Overall, a very good example of a style of pistol that was only made for a very short time.
