Thomas Ketland Brass Barrel Flintlock c1800
A sturdy, English, flintlock pistol sold to the North American frontier market by the Birmingham gunmaker, William Ketland, made around the 1800. Thomas is recorded as having a retail outlet in Philadelphia from 1788 to 1799.
The .70 caliber, round, smoothbore, brass barrel measures 8 ¾ inches with the whole pistol measuring 14 ½ inches. The barrel is engraved ‘LONDON’ with Birmingham private proofs.
The flat lock has typical rudimentary, boarder line, engraving and marked ‘ T / KETLAND / & Co ‘. The action is in good working order.
The brass furniture is in good used condition as is the full-length stock. The rammer appears to be original to the pistol but is stuck fast.
All in all an very good example of a North American, or Canadian frontier flintlock.
