St Etienne Double Barrel by Joseph Lamotte c1780
A fine French, double barrel, St Etienne, flintlock pistol by Joseph Lamotte made around 1780. Lamotte (1716 – 1784) is noted has a quality gun maker who listed Spanish royalty amongst his clientele.
The .47 caliber, round, smooth bore barrels with a grooved sight at the breech measure 4 ½ inches with the pistol measuring 9 inches. The barrels are engraved ‘Jh Lamotte Laine’ and ‘a St Etienne’.
The rounded locks are also engraved ‘Jh Lamotte Laine’ and ‘a St Etienne’. Both locks are in working order.
All the furniture is iron including the spurred pommel butt cap.
The full length, carved, walnut stock with silver wire inlay is in good condition, as is the vacant, oval shaped, wreath wrist echelon.
The ivory tipped rammer appears original to the pistol.
Pitting around the touch holes and darkening of the stock near the flash pan are signs of serious use.
