Rare Joslyn American Civil War Percussion Revolver

$3500

One of the more rarely encountered large percussion revolvers of the American Civil War is the Joslyn. It is estimated that around 3,000 were produced with the US Government contracting 1,100 in December 1861. Many more were purchased on the open market.

The revolvers performed so poorly that most were withdrawn from service by early 1863.

The Joslyn is a large and heavy .44 calibre, five shot, side hammer, percussion revolver with an 8 inch, octagonal barrel. It is noticeably heavier that the Colt 1860 Army.

The barrel top flat is marked ‘ B. F. JOSLYN. / PATD MAY 4TH 1858. ‘ and serial number ‘529’ can be seen on the butt and the side of the loading lever.

While the action holds both half and full cock the cylinder does not rotate. The small spring-loaded lug on the rotary cam that engages the cylinder is missing.

The two-piece factory chequered grips are in a good used condition with the expected handling marks.

Overall, this rare percussion revolver is in a fair to good condition, suitable for any American Civil War collection.
