Private Purchase Cavalry Pistol by Welch c1780

$4750

This pistol was made by John Welch of Birmingham as a private purchase cavalry pistol around 1780. Welch operated from Birmingham from 1766 till 1793.

At first glance this flintlock could be mistaken for a 1777 model sea service pistol. The shape of the stock, the 12 inch barrel, similar brass furniture including the side plate all closely match the sea service pistol. However the larger caliber, .65, thicker barrel and heavier stock identifies, this as a cavalry pistol.

The pistol is 19 inches overall and the Birmingham proofed barrel measures 12 inches.

The rounded lock with swan neck cock is clearly marked ‘WELCH’. The action is in working order with half and full cock engaging. Note the full cock is very light and releases with very slight trigger pressure.

The brass furniture including rammer pipe and tip, are all in good condition.

The walnut full-length stock is in good condition. There is a shallow crack on the grip at the butt cap and another on the left side of the pistol near the muzzle. The rammer appears original to the pistol.
