Pettengill Army Civil War Percussion Revolver

$4950

The double action, C.S. Pettengill revolver with it’s hidden hammer, is one of the most unique military revolvers of the American Civil War.

The Army model is a six shot 44 cal revolver with a 7 ½ inch barrel that has 6 grooves and is a total of 14 inches long and weighing in at 3 pounds.

2,000 out of a total production of 3,000 of these Army revolvers where delivered to the US military between June 1862 and January 1863. Unfortunately for their makers they did not perform well under combat conditions and no more where ordered.

This revolver is a military issued one. While in excellent condition the cylinder does not always turn freely and the trigger return spring is weak, sometime needing assistance to return to rest.

Overall this arm is in excellent condition with clear markings of ‘PETTENGILLS / PATENT 1856’ and ‘PAT JULY 22 1856 / & JULY 27 1856’ on the top strap and ‘PATENTED / NOV 4 1862’ in front of the trigger guard. The serial number 4182 is visible on the butt, inside the trigger guard and on the cylinder, the ‘2’ is faint there.

There is some corrosion around the nipples and the bore is in quite good condition.

The sub-inspector marks of ‘WW’ for William Waters are found on the barrel, frame and the cylinder and a faint ‘W’ is also present on the bottom of the grips.

The grips are in very good condition with the faint acceptance cartouche visible.

Also, as a bonus, an antique holster that fits the revolver is included.

This is an excellent example of a very rare American Civil War revolver that was accepted for military use. Not often encountered even in the USA and almost impossible to find in Australia.
