Over Under by William Clarke, Birmingham c1850

A good condition, largish, over under, percussion pistol from the Birmingham gunsmith William Clarke. Clarke is listed as working in the famous Birmingham gun quarter at 7 Slaney Street in 1846, and 49 Shadwell Steet in 1850.

The .43 caliber, smoothbore barrels have a attached swivel rammer and measure just under 5 inches. The whole pistol measuring a substantial 9 ½ inches. The barrels have Birmingham proof and view marks with the top barrel having a front sight and being marked ‘W CLARKE MAKER’.

The frame and dolphin hammers have foliate engravings. Engravings are also found on the top barrel, trigger guard and cap compartment lid. The belt hook is unadorned.

The right-side lock with the extended hammer is in working order but the left will not hold half cock. It still releases from full cock.

Overall the finely checked grip is in good order with only some minor bruising on the left side. See photos. The German silver wrist echelon is vacant.
