Nickeld Furniture E.I.G. Lancer’s Pistol c1871
An unusual example of a used, East India Government, Lancer’s Pistol dated 1871.
The 16 bore (68 Cal), 8 inch, smoothbore barrel has front and rear sights with various official proof marks and an attached swivel rammer. The barrel is dusty but appears unfired.
The lock is very clearly marked with a crowned broad arrow and E.I.G. (East India Government) behind the hammer and ‘BIRMINGHAM 1871’ in front of the hammer.
The action is strong and in very good working order.
All the brass furniture has been nickel plated and in good condition. This may have been done for an officer or for ceremonial use. Note, the butt tang screw stands proud of the tang.
The full walnut stock is in good, worn condition with the expected handling marks. An East India Government roundel and the stock makers name ‘WOODWARD & SONS’ is still visible on the left side.
After the 1857 Indian Revolt (First War of Independence) the British did not wholly trust the local troops and only issued them less effective and sometimes obsolete weapons. An interesting pistol from the days of the British Raj.
