Late Flintlock Era Pistol by Rooke of Cheltenham

A late flintlock era pistol of quality displaying excellent workmanship from provincial gunmakers. The pistol was made by Willam and Samuel Rooke and probably intended for an officer. W & S Rooke operated from 1820 to 1837.

The heavy, .69 calibre, octagonal, sighted, smoothbore barrel measures 9 inches with the whole pistol measuring 15 inches. As well as the top flat being engraved with ‘CHELTENHAM’, the barrel also features an engraved tang, bands at the breech and a gold touch hole.

The engraved, stepped lock, features a working sliding safety, roller frizzen and rain proof flash pan. ‘W & S ROOKE’ is clearly visible below the pan. The action is in good working order but the cock does display a slight side ways movement when at full cock.

The iron furniture is in good condition. The trigger guard bow is much larger than usual for flintlocks of this era, suggesting it was meant to be used with a gloved hand.

The full-length stock with vacant wrist echelon is in a good used condition with some bruising the expected handling marks.

The horn tipped rammer appears original to the pistol but is stuck fast in the channel.
