Late 17th Century Dutch Wender Pistol

Large two shot Wender pistols are one of the rarest forms of flintlock pistols encountered today. The turn-over or Wender pistol was a new form of a revolving, multi shot firearm that first appeared in Holland in the mid seventeenth century.

These early flintlock pistols shared characteristics with the Wheelock pistols of the same era, small bore and very long barrel. In this case this .53 calibre smoothbore, three stage barrels measure just under 11 ½ inches while the whole pistol measures just over 19 inches.

The pistol has an evenly pitted, grey patina over all the iron parts. The lock has a strong spring action holding half and full cock and the action releases as intended.

The barrel release catch is forward of the trigger guard and also works as intended.

After more than 300 years the wood work is in a good used condition with the fore stock fluted on one side and the iron rammer channel on the other. The rammer may, or may not, be original to the pistol.

The rotating barrel cluster is loose.

Over-all, an awesome large two shot flintlock pistol that would enhance any collection.
