Lancaster Patent Oval Bore Short Rifle c1861

An arsenal repaired and possibly refurbished, Lancaster Patent, oval bore short rifle. This rifle started life in 1861 and was issued to the 10th Company of the Cumberland County Volunteers. At some point it suffered some damage and was arsenal repaired and down graded to 2nd Class and eventually sold out of service.

The .577 caliber, sighted, round, rifled barrel with bayonet lug, measures 31 ½ inches with the whole rifle measuring around 47 inches. The barrel is numbered ‘A / 2102’ with inspection marks and the sold out of service mark stamped at the breech. ‘LANCASTER’S PATENT’ mark appears between the breech and ladder sights.

The lock is marked ‘1861 / TOWER’ with the VR royal cypher behind the hammer. The action is in very good working order.

The stock is in a very good condition. The arsenal repairs to the fore stock and part of the butt stock are evident. See photos. The War Department, 2nd class and the sold out of service marks are clearly visible.
