Irish Double Barrel Pistol by McDermott, Dublin
A small, double barrel, flintlock pistol made by Farrell McDermott of Dublin around 1800. McDermott is listed as operating from 1 Abbey Street, Dublin between 1795 to 1827.
The .50 caliber, round, smoothbore, barrels with center rib sighting measure 3 ½ inches while the whole pistol measures 8 inches.
Both locks feature swan neck cocks, roller frizzens and have safety bolts present. Mr McDermott had an unusual style for engraving his name on the locks. Instead of the usual ‘McDERMOTT’, he had many of his locks engraved ‘M DERMOTT’ with the small ‘c’ floating above the ‘D’. See photos.
The actions on both locks are in working order though the right side hammer is slightly loose.
The iron furniture is in good condition as is the stock with it’s chequering and vacant, wrist echelon. The rammer may be a period replacement.
