French Rubans D’ Acier Holster Pistols c1750

$6250

This impressive pair of holster pistols with fine wire Damascus twist barrels, were probably made around 1750 or earlier. Much later converted from flintlock to percussion. The Belgium proof marks on the barrels were used between 1810 to 1853, suggesting conversion around 1830 to 1840.

The 64 caliber, rifled and sighted, octagonal barrels originally measured around 11 inches but with the addition of a percussion breech, the barrels now measure just over 12 inches. Over all the pistols measure just under 19 inches.

Both barrels have gold gothic script in French reading ‘Rubans D’ Acier Fin’ which translates into ‘Fine Steel Ribbons’. Sometimes called ‘Double Damascus’, were multiple thin strips of iron and steel are forged into rods then twisted in the Damascus manner to form the barrels. A very laborious and time consuming process, subsequently only used on the best of pistols.

The lock plate appears to be original with any engraving or detailing removed at the time of conversion. On one pistol the hammer screw and percussion nipple are replacements. The actions are in good working order.

The walnut stocks have elaborate relief carving and fine silver wire inlays, the majority of which are still present. In the conversion process the stocks have also been extended. The extensions are made of horn and the provision for rammers where removed. There is also some bruising on the barrels.

The stocks have the usual chips, scratches and bruising expected from pistols of this age. The most noticeable of these are around the base of the grips were there has been some shrinkage of the wood.

Overall these pistols are in a good condition. The iron butts, trigger guards, rammer pipes and vacant echelons are largely free of corrosion and show a generous amount of faded blue.
