Early Lombardy Gentleman’s Travelling Pistol c1725

$2250

An early flintlock, travelling pistol probably from the North Italian region of Lombardy. The name ‘COMIZANO’ on the barrel suggest an association with the noted 18th century gun making family of Lorenzo Comizzano. The misspelling may also suggest an early attempt of knock off branding, so common today.

The two stage, fluted to round, .46 caliber, smoothbore barrel measures 7 ¾ inches with the whole pistol measuring 13 inches.

The lock plate, swan neck cock and frizzen have cast steel foliate patterns. The curled trigger is typical of early 18th century pistol design.

The action no longer goes to full cock.

The roughly cast brass trigger guard, side plate, butt cap and wrist echelon all are decorated with female figures.

The stock shows signs of use but is in a general good condition. The rammer appears original to the pistol.

Over-all an interesting, early European, flintlock pistol.
