Dutch M1820 Ring Hammer Conversion Pistols

A very rare pair of the Dutch, Model 1820, percussion cavalry pistols that show signs of excessive dry firing. This is evident by the snapped hammer, retaining screw and replacement nipple on one pistol and the broken nipple on the other.

These Model 1820 pistols were originally made as flintlocks in 1822 and 1823, then later converted to percussion around 1840. It is estimated that around 6,300 of the Model 1820 flintlock pistols where made. An unknown number of these where converted to the uniquely Dutch Ring Hammer style.

The unsighted, round, smoothbore barrels with swivel rammers are of .69 caliber and measure 8 inches. Each pistol measures just under 15 inches.

Behind the remains of the brass flash pans, is the mark of the Dutch arms inspector, De heer Benoit Saltzherr along with the dates ‘22’ for 1822 and ‘23’ for 1823. The locks are functional but it is recommended that you do not work the action on the lock ‘23’.

The regulation brass furniture is in good condition. Please note that with pistol ‘23’ the barrel band and butt cap no longer fit quite flush against the stock. The fit on pistol ‘22’ is flush.

The three-quarter walnut stocks with various inspection marks are in good condition.

Over all, an interesting pair of Dutch cavalry pistols that are not often encountered in Australia.
