Colt Brevete 1851 Navy by Pierre J Fagard
Offered here is an original, Colt authorised, Model 1851 Colt Navy, percussion revolver made by Pierre Joseph Fagard of Saint-Rémy, Belgium.
In 1851 Colt was in no position to open a factory in Europe so he chose to contract local gunmakers to produce his revolvers in Belgium. Colt’s English patent solicitor, William Newton, arranged to have the experienced Belgium gunmaker, Monsieur Devos-Sera ,to over-see the process and to conduct the final quality inspection after each revolver was proofed. If the revolver passed the inspection, the barrel was stamped ‘COLT / BREVETE’.
Pierre Fagard was one of those few contract gun makers.
The .36 caliber, octagonal, smoothbore barrel measures 7 ½ inches with the whole revolver measuring 12 ½ inches. The barrel top flat is clearly stamped ‘COLT / BREVETE’. Note that the barrel is smoothbore and not rifled. This turns the revolver into a small-bore, hand-held shotgun!
There is no remaining scene on the six-shot cylinder. A worn ‘ELG’ proof is found on the shoulder of the cylinder. The action is light but in good working order.
The serial number ‘3994’ is found on the barrel, frame and trigger guard. The brass back strap and square back ,trigger guard are in good condition.
The grips are slightly undersized suggesting a light sanding and a revarnish.
The gunsmith’s name ‘P J FAGARD’ appears on the trigger guard under the grips, see photos.
A rare opportunity to acquire a genuine Colt Brevete, not a knock-off.
