Colt Brevet Austrian K.K.P. Dragoon #390
Colt Brevet, Austrian K.K.P. revolvers are extremely scarce and much sought after. They were made under license by the ‘Kaiserlich-koeniglich Privilegierten Maschinen und Spinnen Fabrik’, abbreviation K.K.P. That translates to the Imperial & Royal Privileged Machinery, Textile and Spinning Factory.
It is estimated that around 1,000 were made for the use of Austrian officers from 1849 to 1854. Many went to naval officers, hence the name often used amongst collectors ‘KRIEGSMARINE’ revolver.
Although only a .36 caliber, the design of these revolvers was based on the Colt Dragoon with its octagonal barrel housing and round cylinder stops.
The barrel has a small narrow front sight and measures 5 ¼ inches. The whole revolver measures around 11 inches. Typical of the military version, the six-shot cylinder has minimal embellishments.
The action is at fault, only rotating the cylinder once before manual intervention is required. Also the barrel has a slight wobble.
The left side of the frame in engrave ‘PATENT 1849’ and the right side has ‘K:K:P: MASCHIN:FABRI: / INSBRUCK’ . Note some other specimens have the spelling INNSBRUCK.
This revolver features a semi square, back trigger guard and the serial number ‘390’ is on the butt.
The long thin Austrian Beechwood grips are in good condition with the expected handling marks. Some initials have been carved on the butt, see photos.
Overall, this Austrian Model 1849, Colt is in very good condition.
Very few of these revolvers are in private hands, most surviving examples are in museums.
