Cased Thornton Revolver with NZ Providence
Offer here is a very good, as found, cased, New Zealand colonial era, transitional, six shot percussion revolver with some providence.
The octagonal, .38 caliber, rifled barrel with a bead front sight measures 5 inches while the whole revolver measures 11 ½ inches. The top flat is engraved ‘THORNTON & SONS LONDON’ and the bottom flat has Birmingham proofs.
The cylinder also has Birmingham proofs and the chamber numbered 1 to six.
The Birmingham proofs suggest that the revolver was made in Birmingham and retailed in London.
The action is in very good condition and the revolver retains much of its original case colours.
The walnut grips are finely chequered and in excellent condition.
The revolver comes in its original Oak case with what appears to be original accessories. The powder flask is marked ‘SYKES’. There is a split on the lid, see photos.
This revolver also comes with its original Port of Auckland, New Zealand import permit dated 3rd October 1876.
Over-all this is a very interesting package.
