Cased Tap Action flintlock by Troughton c1815

A rare, cased, tap action flintlock by Thomas Troughton made around 1815. Thomas is recorded as working in Preston, Lancashire from 1780 to 1820.

The .42 caliber (60 bore) screw off, round, smoothbore barrel measures 2 ½ inches with the whole pistol measuring just under 8 inches.

The brass, box-lock frame has engraved military themes with ‘THOUGHTON’ and ‘PRESTON’ appearing on ovals. Post 1813 Birmingham proof marks appear forward of the trigger guard. The action is stiff but still in working order as it the ‘Tap’. The sliding safety is stuck and in need of oil.

The slab-sided walnut grip shows some impact marks on the butt. The metal to wood fit is excellent.

The fitted case with accessories is in very good condition and appears to be original to the pistol. The accessories are a turn screw, a combined loading tool and 60 bore bullet mold and a leather covered powder flask.
