Brown Bess Type Volunteer Musket C1800

$3550

A Napoleonic era, volunteer militia musket in the Brown Bess style with some notable differences. These include a much heavier breech, a slightly smaller lock and barrel keys instead of pins. There is no indication as to the maker of this musket.

The heavy, .79 caliber, sighted, round barrel with private proofs measures 39 inches with the whole arm measuring 44 inches.

The boarder engraved lock is marked with a Crown over ‘GR’ but no other marks. As mention it is slightly smaller than the standard Brown Bess lock. The action is in good working order.

The brass furniture, brass vacant echelon and sling swivels are all in good condition and a clear rack number of ‘25’ is on the butt tang. The flat side plate is not of the Bess type but rather similar to hunting guns of the era.

The full-length stock shows signs of much use. There is a noticeable crack running from the barrel tang to the lock plate tail. There are some cracks and splits around the barrel keys and one of the keys is loose. There is also very noticeable wear of the stock in front of the rammer entry pipe from prolonged use. See Photos.

All in all a very interesting volunteer militia, musket and judging from the ware on the stock, one that may have seen some actual service.
