Early Flintlock from the Cominazzi Dynasty
From the mid 16th century, the Cominazzi dynasty of gun and barrel makers built a solid reputation for quality that lasted into the 19th century. Variations of the Cominazzi name changed over the centuries. Variations include Cominazzo, Cominato, Cominasso and Cominazo.
Offer here is an Italian, flintlock travelling pistol made around 1690 – 1720 with the barrel marked ‘COMINAZO’.
The two stage, fluted to round, .46 caliber, smoothbore barrel measures 7 ¾ inches with the whole pistol measuring 13 inches.
The lock plate, swan neck cock and frizzen have cast steel foliate patterns. The curled trigger is typical of early 18th century pistol design.
The action no longer goes to full cock.
The brass furniture which features female figures on the trigger guard, side plate, butt cap and wrist echelon are all in good but worn condition.
The stock shows signs of use but is in a general, good condition. The rammer may be a replacement.
Over-all an interesting, early European, flintlock pistol.
