Ordnance Model Oval Bore Lancaster Carbine c1861
1855 saw the introduction of the Lancaster, Oval Bore carbine. Offered here is a Victorian Volunteer’s Sapper’s / Miner’s Carbine in fair condition dated 1861.
The .577 [25 bore] oval bore barrel with graduated ladder sights measures 31 ½ inches and the whole carbine measures 47 ½ inches.
The lock is marked ‘1861 / TOWER’ with the ‘Royal Cypher / VR’ behind the hammer. Inspection marks with over stamped number of ‘2098’ appear at the breech and the ‘LANCASTER’S PATENT’ is still partially viable, forward of the rear ladder sights.
The action is in good working order.
With the exception of a missing screw from the trigger guard, the brass furniture is in good condition. The butt tang has clear Victorian Volunteer’s markings of ‘G62 / 200 / VV’.
The walnut stock shows a goodly amount of wear and the Government rondel has been de-faced on the shoulder stock.
