1801 Model Long Sea Service Pistol
The British Royal Navy, sea service pistol has a unique distinction amongst military pistols of the flintlock era. With only minor changes, these pistols remained in general use for over 100 years from 1716.
The pistol offered here is the 1801 model. The markings on the lock have been stamped rather that engraved, there is a fence at the rear of the round iron flash pan.
The .55 caliber, round, smooth bore barrel measures 12 inches with the whole pistol measuring around 19 ½ inches. The barrel features Tower proofs.
The lock carries the ‘TOWER’, Royal Cypher and ‘RG’ marks. The action is in good working order. Note that the pistol appears to have been de-activated with a steel or similar ball jammed into the barrel.
Both the full-length stock and brass furniture are in good used condition. The numbers ‘2377’ appear on the scull crusher butt cap and on the stock forward of the side plate. The stock also has ‘BO’ impressed behind the apron and ‘UD’ at the tail of the side plate. ‘UD’ may refer to the upper deck.
A genuine Napoleonic Era, long barrel sea service pistol.
