T Richards Sliding Cut-Off pistol c1760

A very rare, side by side, sliding cut-off flintlock pistol made by Thomas Richards around 1770. Thomas is recorded as working from 54 High Street, London from 1768 to 1784.

The sliding cut-off flintlock is an exceptionally rare form of pistol. On the left side is a brass sliding bar that when engaged exposes the hidden flash pan ready for a second shot.

The .50 caliber, round, three stage, smoothbore, cannon barrels measure 4 inches each while the whole pistol measures around 10 ½ inches. Both barrels still screw off.

The boarder lined breech is engraved with flowers and a stand of arms with the right side having ‘T RICHARDS’ in a scroll. Each breech is also marked with early London view and proof marks as well as the barrel maker’s mark of ‘TR’ for Thomas Richards.

The action is in working order, as is the steel sliding cut-off. The trigger guard is loose.

For a 250 years old antique with few repairs, the walnut stock presents well. See photos. Much of the original silver wire work is still present including the arrow pierced lover’s heart on the right side.

The wrist echelon is engraved with the letters that appear to be ‘JO’ and the pistol is finished off with an engraved bulbous pommel and butt cap.
