Provincial Coat Pistol by Pether c1840

A good to very good example of an English coat pistol from the provincial gun maker William Pether of Oxford.
The sighted octagonal .54 calibre smooth bore barrel measures 6 5/8 inches with the whole pistol measuring 11 ¾ inches.
The lock and hammer have folate engraving with the maker’s name ‘PETHER’ lightly engraved on the lower edge of the lock plate. The trigger guard and rammer pipe are also engraved.
Apart from the usual dings, ware on the checked grip and handling marks the full length stock is in a very good solid and complete condition with no cracks, breaks or repairs. This includes the butt. The rammer with worm is original to the pistol.
The action is in crisp working order.
The lock plate was on time cleaned bright and show some expected ware as does the breech and nipple well. The barrel, trigger guard and rammer pipe where refinished some time ago.
All in all this is a very solid and attractive example of an English provincial percussion pistol.
