Massachusetts Arms Co Wesson & Leavitt c1850

A very, very rare percussion revolver from the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Fall Illinois. Thanks to an injunction put on the company by Samuel Colt its thought that only about 1000 of these revolvers were ever produced. This is one of the
The sighted 4 inch round barrel is hinged on the frame from just behind the plain cylinder with its characteristic domed face.
The top strap is clearly marked ‘MASS ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS’ and the ‘WESSON’S & LEAVITT’S PATENT’ is visible on the lock plate. The number 716 appears on the front of the cylinder arbour which differs from the number 112 which is on the frame at the rear of the cylinder. ‘WESSON’S PATENT AUG 28, 1849’ appears on the face of the bevel gear
I suspect that the serial number is the ‘112’ as the cylinder is not marked, a characteristic of the earlier dragoon revolvers.
The grips are in a good condition as is silvering on the back strop and trigger guard. All the metal surfaces are clear and clean with crisp edges.
The action is at fault, not uncommon for these complex revolvers.
