Cased Bentley Improved Selfacting Pistol c1855

A cased English pepperbox in excellent condition made around 1855.
The .31 caliber six shot fluted barrel cluster measures almost 3 inches with the whole pistol measuring 7 inches. An unusual feature of this pepperbox is that each nipple has an individual shield around it to help prevent chain fire.
The German silver frame with rounded butt and trigger guard is lightly engraved. The number ‘169’ appears behind the hammer with the right side being marked ‘IMPROVED / SELFACTING / PISTOL’ and the left side ‘BY HER / MAJESTIES ROYAL / LETTERS PATENT / -J. BENTLY- / PATENTEE’.
The two piece walnut grips are in very good condition and the action is in very good working order.
The casing contains its original accessories including the special nipple wrench required for the shielded nipples. There is a split on the bottom of the case and the key is absent.
