Allen & Wheelock Medium Frame Percussion Revolver

The distinctive, solid frame, bar hammer revolver was Allen & Wheelock’s first venture in to the percussion revolver market. Offered here is a good example of a five shot, medium frame Allen & Wheelock bar hammer percussion revolver in .31 calibre.

The rifled, octagonal barrel measures 3 ½ inches with the whole revolver measuring just over 8 inches. The barrel appears to have been cleaned and re-blued, leaving the markings very faint. It should read ‘ALLEN & WHEELOCK WORCHTER MASS / ALLEN’S PATENT APRIL 16. 1845’.

The bar hammer is clearly marked ‘PATENTED / APRIL 16. 1845’. The action works as it was intended. Note there is a very small brass repair on the hammer. See photos.

The action works as intended. There is some pitting on the cylinder but the dog and deer in the forest scene is clearly visible.

The batch number or serial number ‘58’ is visible on the cylinder, inside the trigger guard and on the frame under the walnut grips.

All in all, a rare American percussion revolver in good condition.
