Allen & Wheelock Bar Hammer Revolver c1857

A very scarce percussion revolver from the prolific American gun maker Ethan Allen.

The distinctive, solid frame, bar hammer revolver was Allen & Wheelock’s first venture into the percussion revolver market. Offered here is a very good example of a five shot, long or large frame Allen & Wheelock bar hammer percussion revolver in .31 calibre.

The rifled, octagonal barrel measures 3 inches with the whole revolver measuring 7 3/4 inches.

The top strap is clearly marked ‘ALLAN & WHEELOCK’ and the bar hammer ‘PATENTED / APRIL 16. 1845’. The action is at fault, the cylinder rotates but the hammer does not fall.

The cylinder scene with forest, animals and dog chasing deer is very clear and crisp. The serial or batch number of 232 appears on the cylinder, frame and inside the trigger guard.

All in all, a rare American percussion revolver in good condition.
